APIs vs. MCP Servers: How They Work Together

When an AI assistant creates a blog draft or checks a database, several pieces of software work together. APIs and MCP servers play different roles in that process. Understanding the difference makes AI automation much easier to follow.

An API, short for Application Programming Interface, defines how software can interact with another component or service. It specifies available operations, required inputs, and expected results. APIs exist in many forms, including web services and software libraries. MDN’s API overview

For example, the WordPress REST API lets authorized software create posts, retrieve content, and change a post’s publication status. A program sends a request containing details such as the title and article body, and WordPress returns a response. WordPress posts API

An MCP server is a program that implements the Model Context Protocol. It gives compatible AI applications a standard way to discover and access capabilities. Those capabilities can include tools that perform actions, resources that supply information, and reusable prompt templates. MCP server concepts

In our blog setup, the MCP server exposes tools with names such as create_draft, get_post, and publish_post. Their descriptions and input definitions help the assistant understand which tool fits the request.

Here is how the pieces work together:

  1. You ask the assistant to draft a blog post.
  2. The assistant prepares the content and selects the appropriate tool.
  3. The AI application sends the tool call through its MCP client.
  4. The MCP server translates that call into a WordPress API request.
  5. WordPress saves the draft and returns its ID.
  6. The result travels back to the assistant.

The API performs the website operation. The MCP server provides a standardized connection between that operation and the AI application. MCP servers can run locally or remotely. MCP architecture

The main difference is scope. API is a broad term for a software interface. MCP is a specific protocol, and an MCP server implements it. They are complementary technologies, rather than competing replacements.

An MCP server also does not have to call a web API. It might read local files, query a database, or perform calculations directly. Likewise, an AI application can use APIs without MCP if developers build the integration themselves.

MCP standardizes the connection, but developers still need to implement the underlying actions and respect access permissions. In our publishing workflow, the assistant writes the article, the MCP server exposes the publishing tools, and WordPress stores and publishes the content.

GPT-6 Astra vs. GPT-5.6 Sol: What Has Changed?

OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra puts more emphasis on completing demanding work across research, code, browsers, and documents. GPT-5.6 Sol remains a capable option for professional tasks at a lower advertised API price. The practical question is whether Astra’s improvements matter for the work you actually do.

What Astra does differently

According to OpenAI’s model guidance, Astra is better than Sol at staying coherent during long tasks and following detailed instructions. It can incorporate changing requirements without losing track of the broader assignment.

That makes Astra worth considering for projects with several connected steps, such as researching a topic, checking sources, drafting an article, and preparing supporting documents. This is a practical interpretation of OpenAI’s guidance, rather than a guarantee for every project.

Astra can also ask more clarifying questions and perform more extensive checks. Clear instructions about length, tone, and when to proceed are useful if you want concise results with fewer interruptions.

Some specifications stay the same

The official model pages list a 1,050,000-token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens for both models. Tokens are the units models use to process text. Both accept text and images and produce text, so Astra’s advantage is not simply a larger advertised context window.

Astra’s listed knowledge cutoff is April 30, 2026, compared with February 16, 2026, for Sol. A newer cutoff still does not replace checking current sources. See the specifications for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 Sol.

The price difference

As of September 6, 2026, standard API rates per million tokens are $10 for input and $50 for output with Astra, versus $4 and $20 with Sol. These are API usage prices, not ChatGPT subscription fees. Sol’s listed pricing is promotional, available at least through November 21, 2026. Long prompts above 272,000 input tokens carry higher rates for both models.

Which should you choose?

My recommendation is to try Sol first for routine drafting and clearly defined assignments, then compare Astra on work that needs sustained reasoning or repeated revisions. Judge the finished result, the corrections required, and the total cost. A more expensive token rate does not automatically mean a more expensive completed task, but Astra’s value depends on your workflow.

••Gluten Sensitivity blamed on Roundup in Foods••

In my 2-month free course on WhatsApp, I debunk the gluten myth and explain that the health issues attributed to gluten have nothing to do with gluten itself but are due to the Roundup herbicide sprayed on wheat crops before harvesting. The following news article serves as the smoking gun evidence for this claim.

Additionally, I want to mention that earlier this year, a major study revealed that gluten sensitivity is mostly due to the nocebo effect. Those who believed they were gluten sensitive experienced health problems even when they were fed gluten-free food but were informed otherwise.
